5G RedCap Deployments Expand as Carriers Target IoT Density
US carriers are rolling out RedCap through 2026, starting in urban and suburban markets, targeting devices that need more than LTE-M but not full 5G.

Major US carriers are deploying 5G RedCap capability through 2026, concentrating first on urban and suburban markets and prioritising areas with high IoT device density. Wider availability is expected during 2027.
RedCap — Reduced Capability — targets a gap in the cellular IoT lineup. LTE-M and NB-IoT serve low-bandwidth, battery-powered devices well, and full 5G serves handsets, but between them sit devices that need real throughput without a phone's power budget: video surveillance, wearables, smart meters and industrial sensors. RedCap reaches roughly 150 Mbps down and 50 Mbps up while drawing substantially less power than a standard 5G module.
The deployment pattern is the part worth planning around. Coverage that begins in dense urban areas is a poor match for utility and agricultural deployments, which are exactly the applications RedCap's throughput suits. For anything shipping in the next eighteen months, the sensible assumption is that RedCap is a roadmap item rather than a coverage guarantee, and LTE-M or NB-IoT remains the fallback that has to work.
