A 5G Module Aimed at the Railway's Successor to GSM-R
Quectel has added an LGA variant of the RG660Qx on FRMCS bands n100 and n101, so rail suppliers can begin validation ahead of the migration away from GSM-R.

Quectel has added an LGA variant to its RG660Qx 5G module series, supporting FRMCS bands n100 and n101. The module is built on Qualcomm's X85 and X82 5G Modem-RF systems, supports Ethernet up to 10 Gbps and includes power class 1.5 for extended coverage. It will be available with an evaluation kit once validation completes, and Quectel says it plans early-stage testing engagement with key rail players.
FRMCS — the Future Railway Mobile Communication System — succeeds GSM-R across European and international rail networks, carrying train control, signalling, operational communications and other mission-critical applications. GSM-R has been the backbone of European rail communications for two decades and is reaching the end of its supportable life, which makes this one of the larger and slower infrastructure migrations underway anywhere.
The dedicated bands are the part worth understanding. n100 and n101 are allocated specifically for railway use, which matters because rail communications cannot share capacity with public traffic during an incident — the moment when a public network is most congested is exactly the moment a railway most needs its channel. Dedicated spectrum makes the availability guarantee possible, and it also means the radio hardware is a specialised product rather than a repackaged commercial module.
The LGA form factor is a quiet but practical detail. Land grid array modules are soldered directly to the host board rather than plugged into a socket, which suits equipment that must survive years of vibration in a moving vehicle or a trackside cabinet, and which is the natural choice for a supplier building a product rather than a prototype. Offering it now, ahead of full validation, is aimed at exactly that audience: rail suppliers need silicon in hand long before deployment because their own certification cycles are measured in years.
Leo Yao, product head at Quectel Wireless Solutions, framed FRMCS as one of the most significant communications transitions the rail industry will undergo in the coming years — which, given the fleet, trackside and signalling equipment that has to change with it, is not marketing overstatement. The whole migration is a decade-scale programme, and the modules are the first thing that has to exist.
