A Fifty-Gram Acoustic Camera That Plugs Into a Phone

Fluke has launched the ii01, an acoustic camera that works as a USB-C accessory to an Android phone or tablet rather than as a standalone instrument. It weighs roughly 50 grams, covers 2 kHz to 48 kHz, locates sound sources by overlaying an acoustic image on the camera view, and includes a dedicated leak mode with a real-time decibel reading at the target point. It is the first acoustic product in the company's iSee mobile imaging line, and is aimed at manufacturing and process plants.

Compressed air is the reason this category exists. Air is the most expensive utility in most plants per unit of useful work delivered, and a substantial fraction of what a compressor produces is lost through leaks that nobody can hear over the ambient noise of a running facility. Ultrasonic leak detection has always worked — a leak radiates strongly well above the range of human hearing and above most machinery noise — but it traditionally meant a directional probe and headphones, swept slowly by someone who knew how to interpret what they were hearing. An acoustic camera replaces that with a picture: the leak appears as a bright spot on a live image, which turns a skilled search into a walk-through.

The form factor is the actual news. Standalone acoustic cameras have been available for years and cost enough that they are bought by corporate energy teams, used during an annual survey, and then locked in a cupboard. A 50-gram accessory that clips onto a phone the technician already carries is a different proposition: it can live in a toolbox, be used during a routine round, and be picked up by someone who was walking past anyway. The value of leak detection is almost entirely a function of how often it happens, because leaks reappear continuously as fittings age and hoses are moved, and an annual survey is a snapshot of a population that regenerates.

Two cautions are worth carrying into any evaluation. Frequency range and microphone count determine how small a leak can be found and from how far — the specification here gives the range but not the array size, which is the figure to ask for against any competing device. And finding leaks is the easy half: the plants that actually reduce compressed-air cost are the ones that tag what they find, feed it into the maintenance system, and measure the compressor's output afterwards. A camera that produces a folder of images and no work orders has cost money rather than saved it.
