A Lock Line That Separates Credential From Transport

ULTRALOQ has shipped three Matter-over-Thread locks, two of them Aliro-certified, plus a $299.99 model that fuses BLE, UWB ranging and radar to decide whether you are actually walking to the door.

ULTRALOQ announced three Matter-over-Thread smart locks on 25 September, and the interesting thing is how deliberately the technologies are separated. UWB handles proximity, Aliro handles credentials, Matter handles what the home does about it.

The $299.99 Bolt Mission is presented as the industry's first ultra-wideband smart lock. It combines Bluetooth LE discovery, UWB ranging, radar-based presence detection and local processing to determine whether the user is actually approaching the door — rather than, as the publication puts it, unlocking simply because an authorised phone is within Bluetooth range. That distinction is the whole product. Proximity-based unlocking has a long history of opening doors because someone walked past on the inside.

The $269.99 Bolt Pro and $249.99 Latch 5 Pro are Aliro-certified, which means a phone can act as a digital key with credentials stored in Apple Wallet or Samsung Wallet. Aliro is the Connectivity Standards Alliance's open digital-access credential standard, developed with support from Apple, Google and Samsung, and this is described as the first multi-model line of Aliro-certified locks.

All three are Matter certified and work with Apple Home and other major platforms. All three use Matter over Thread, so a Thread border router is required for remote access. Unlock methods across the range cover fingerprint, PIN, app, wallet key and physical key. They sell through ULTRALOQ's store and Amazon now, with Home Depot online from October.

Two observations for people building rather than buying. A shipping Aliro product line turns the credential standard from a specification into something an installer can quote, and it arrives at mainstream retail prices rather than commercial access-control ones. And the Bolt Mission's sensor stack — BLE for discovery, UWB for distance, radar for presence, resolved locally — is the pattern edge designers keep reaching for when one modality produces too many false triggers. Here it is productised inside a battery-powered device, which is the hard version.
