A Mine Safety System That Takes the Controls

Hexagon's Vehicle Intervention System reaches EMESRT Level 9 — it can inhibit propulsion and apply braking itself when thresholds are breached, across mixed fleets without OEM lock-in.

Hexagon has launched a next-generation Vehicle Intervention System for surface mines, and the significant word in the announcement is intervention. An EMESRT Level 9 classification means the system can automatically take control of a machine in defined high-risk situations when safety thresholds are breached — not warn the operator, not log the event, but act.

The functions listed follow from that: collision prevention between vehicles, people and obstacles; speed limit enforcement; maintenance of safe following distances; overspeed management on ramps; and automatic safe shutdown if critical system faults occur. To deliver them the system can inhibit propulsion, apply retardation or braking, and enforce operational parameters, working across a broad range of vehicle types and manufacturers without OEM lock-in.

That last clause is the commercially interesting one. A surface mine typically runs a mixed fleet — haul trucks from one manufacturer, loaders from another, light vehicles from a third, plus contractor vehicles that change with the contract. A safety system supplied by a single OEM covers that OEM's machines, which leaves the interactions between brands, and it is precisely the interactions that kill people. A vendor-independent intervention layer is harder to build, because it must interface with control systems that were not designed to be commanded by third parties, but it is the only version of the idea that matches how mines actually operate.

Levels above warning also raise a design question worth naming: an automated system that can brake a 300-tonne haul truck must be right, because an unnecessary intervention on a ramp or in traffic creates its own hazard. That is why the certification path matters, and Hexagon states the system achieved University of Pretoria Technology Readiness Level 4 certification, becoming the first open-pit Level 9 solution to reach that milestone.

The EMESRT framework — the Earth Moving Equipment Safety Round Table's nine-level control hierarchy — has become the common vocabulary for these systems precisely because it separates awareness from advisory from intervention, and lets a mine specify what it is buying without ambiguity.

Hexagon says the VIS has been operational since 2018 across four continents, and the announcement references integration with advanced 4D radar sensing as part of its wider safety portfolio.
