Australia Passes 100 Community Batteries and Funds 47 More
ARENA confirmed the hundredth installation and allocated a further AU$23.2 million across three projects, generating a public dataset on how distribution-connected storage actually behaves.

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency has confirmed the installation of the hundredth community battery under its Community Batteries Funding Initiative, and allocated a further AU$23.2 million in Round 2 funding across three projects covering 47 additional batteries.
The allocations are specific. The YES Group Regional Community Batteries Project receives AU$10.29 million for 14 batteries across regional South Australia and New South Wales. Ausgrid's Network-led Community Battery Scale-up receives AU$8 million for 21 batteries across Sydney, the Central Coast and the Hunter region. The City of Newcastle Innovative Battery Solutions Project receives AU$5 million for 12 batteries integrated with embedded solar networks. The programme sits under the federal government's AU$200 million Community Batteries for Household Solar measure, of which AU$171 million was allocated to ARENA to test and scale the concept nationally.
A government agency publishing a completed count rather than a target is rare enough to be worth noting on its own. One hundred delivered units plus 47 newly funded gives a real denominator for anyone benchmarking neighbourhood-scale storage economics, and the split across a retailer-led project, a network-led project and a council-led project means three different ownership and dispatch models are being tested at the same time.
The more durable output may be the data. ARENA states the initiative is generating real-world evidence on battery performance, costs, business models, customer benefits and grid impacts — which is to say a public dataset on how distribution-connected storage behaves in service rather than in a model. Anyone sizing a battery on a low-voltage feeder currently works from vendor curves and assumptions about coincident demand; a hundred instrumented installations across different network conditions is a materially better basis.
ARENA acting chief executive Chris Faris framed the purpose plainly: community batteries let neighbourhoods store excess rooftop solar during the day and release it when it is needed most. The engineering interest sits underneath that — in what a hundred of them, monitored, reveal about a distribution network's actual hosting capacity.
