Bluetooth Channel Sounding Targets Digital Car Keys and Item Finding

Bluetooth Channel Sounding, which gives BLE more accurate and more secure distance measurement, is moving into products, with Samsung expecting it to support a broader range of proximity-based services during 2026 including digital car keys and more precise device discovery.

The security half matters more than the accuracy half. Proximity systems built on signal strength have always been vulnerable to relay attacks: an attacker forwards the radio signal between a key in a house and a car on the driveway, and the car concludes the key is next to it. This class of attack has been demonstrated against keyless entry systems for years. Channel Sounding measures distance by timing rather than by inferring it from signal strength, which makes the deception substantially harder because the relay adds delay that the measurement can see.

For anyone building access control, asset tracking or anything where proximity grants permission, this is the difference between an approximation that can be spoofed and a measurement that resists it. It is worth treating as a requirement rather than a feature in any new design where being near something is what authorises an action.
