Comprehensive building automation system deployments are reported to reduce overall energy consumption by 20 to 40 percent and to cut peak demand by 15 to 30 percent, with AI-driven HVAC control credited with savings of 30 to 70 percent in climate control specifically.
The peak demand figure deserves more attention than the consumption figure, because the two are billed differently. Commercial tariffs commonly include a demand charge based on the highest fifteen-minute draw in a billing period, which means a single hot afternoon can set a cost that persists across the whole month. Shaving peaks therefore produces savings out of proportion to the energy actually avoided, and it is the number that makes automation projects pay back faster than a consumption-only model predicts.
The wide range on the HVAC figure is a signal to read carefully. A 30 to 70 percent spread means the result depends almost entirely on the baseline, and the buildings at the top of that range are the ones that were being run badly — schedules that never changed after a tenant moved out, simultaneous heating and cooling, systems left in manual override for years. The savings are real, but a well-commissioned building will land at the bottom of the range, and knowing which building you have is what separates a credible business case from a brochure figure.
