Cognex Puts a PC-Class AI Vision System Into a Smart Camera

The In-Sight 3900 runs inspections up to four times faster at resolutions to 25 megapixels, standalone, with no external industrial PC in the cabinet.

Cognex announced the In-Sight 3900 on 5 May 2026 as its highest-performance embedded AI vision system, built on Qualcomm Dragonwing platforms with a dedicated AI processor for deterministic decision-making at the edge. It processes inspections up to four times faster than previous Cognex vision systems and supports image resolutions up to 25 megapixels, for wider fields of view and finer measurements.

The architectural claim is that it runs standalone, without an external PC, using a dual Ethernet arrangement for connections to PLCs, robots and enterprise systems. It offers both Edge AI tools aimed at fast deployment and Advanced AI tools for high-variability applications, and pairs with Cognex OneVision so models are developed centrally and executed on the line. Named target sectors are packaging, automotive, electronics and consumer goods.

What is worth extracting from a vendor launch is the class change rather than the specifications. Inspection at 25 megapixels with deep-learning tools has until recently meant a camera plus an industrial PC with a GPU, sitting in a cabinet that then needs power, cooling, an operating system somebody patches, and licences somebody renews. Moving that into the camera removes a device from the cabinet and bounds the inspection latency on-device rather than across a link.

CEO Matt Moschner called it a major leap for embedded AI vision on the factory floor. Andrea Sabbadini, an engineering manager at Fuji Seal, is quoted saying it lets them run Cognex Edge AI Read tools at full production speed, and Qualcomm's Shyam Krishnamurthy also endorsed the launch.

The part to plan around is the split: train centrally, execute locally. That is the right architecture and it creates an obligation. Across a multi-site rollout you need model versioning, change control and a record of which camera is running which model version — otherwise a quality question six months from now has no answer, because nobody can say what the system was actually doing at the time.
