Electronics Named a Priority Group for EU Digital Product Passports

The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation — Regulation (EU) 2024/1781, in force since 18 July 2024 — identifies electronics as a priority product group for Digital Product Passport requirements. The delegated act covering electronics is expected among the earlier ones published under the regulation, attributed both to the sector's environmental weight and to the comparatively mature data infrastructure the industry already has.

That second reason is worth noticing, because it inverts the usual expectation about who gets regulated first. Electronics is early not despite being complex but because it already tracks components, revisions and suppliers in structured systems. The regulation is asking for data that mostly exists somewhere in an ERP or a PLM system, rather than data nobody has ever collected.

For a connected-hardware manufacturer that reframes the work. The difficulty is unlikely to be measuring anything new; it will be assembling records that currently live in a bill of materials, a supplier questionnaire, a compliance folder and somebody's spreadsheet into one machine-readable record that stays accurate as the product changes. That is an integration problem with a deadline attached, and integration problems do not compress well when the deadline gets close.
