Emerson Wins the Control System for Europe's First Greenfield SAF Plant

Technip Energies has picked Emerson to supply the integrated control and safety system for SkyNRG's sustainable aviation fuel plant at Delfzijl in the Netherlands, reported on 15 September. The site is described as Europe's first dedicated greenfield SAF production facility, and is expected to produce around 100,000 tonnes a year once fully operational in 2028.

The scope is Emerson's DeltaV ICSS, combining distributed control and safety instrumented systems in one architecture. The plant converts residual fats and greases into a drop-in jet fuel — one that blends with conventional kerosene without modification to aircraft or airport infrastructure, which is the property that makes SAF deployable at all.

Bart Rosendaal, SkyNRG's site director, said working with experienced partners like Technip Energies and Emerson helps ensure a safe, reliable and future-ready plant from day one. Nathan Pettus, Emerson president, pointed at the timing: early engineering alignment and a fully integrated automation architecture are key to delivering predictable project outcomes.

That timing is the substantive detail. First-of-a-kind process plants are where ICSS scope creep and late changes to safety loops quietly consume the schedule, because the process design is still moving while the control narrative is being written. An automation vendor engaged during engineering rather than at factory acceptance testing is a different project from the one that usually gets described afterwards.

The commercial driver is the EU ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation, which requires a minimum 2 percent SAF blend from 2025, rising to 70 percent by 2050. Against the volume of SAF press coverage, a named European project with a site, a capacity figure and a start-up year is unusually concrete.
