EU AFIR Mandates ISO 15118 Support for V2G-Capable Chargers

The EU's Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation requires ISO 15118 support on V2G-capable charge points from January 2026, with full Plug and Charge compliance mandated for newly deployed public charging points by 2027.
ISO 15118 defines how a vehicle and a charger talk to each other, across AC, DC, wireless and pantograph charging. It carries both the technical negotiation and the financial one, which is what makes Plug and Charge possible: the vehicle authenticates itself to the charger using a certificate, and billing happens without an app, a card or an account lookup at the point of use.
The V2G half is the more consequential requirement, because it changes what a parked car is. Bidirectional charging turns a fleet of vehicles into distributed storage that a grid operator can draw on for balancing, peak shaving and frequency regulation. Mandating the communication standard is the precondition for any of that working across manufacturers, and it is a useful reminder that the hard part of vehicle-to-grid was never the power electronics but agreeing on how the two sides negotiate.
