Executive Order Accelerates Federal Post-Quantum Migration

Executive Order 14412, issued in June 2026, mandates an accelerated government-wide migration to post-quantum cryptography for US federal systems, setting binding deadlines for high-value assets. It builds on the NIST standards finalised in August 2024 — FIPS 203, 204 and 205 — which removed the main technical obstacle to adoption by giving implementers algorithms to standardise on.

Federal procurement deadlines matter well beyond federal systems, which is the reason to pay attention even if you sell nowhere near government. A binding date creates demand for compliant parts and libraries, which pulls vendor roadmaps forward, which is usually how a standard reaches the rest of the market. The same pattern moved TLS 1.2 and then 1.3 through the industry faster than any voluntary effort had managed.

NIST's stated expectation is that organisations will have retired today's public-key algorithms by 2035. For most software that is a comfortable horizon. For hardware being specified this year with a ten-year service life, the two dates overlap, which means the migration is not a future project but a present design constraint.
