GigE Vision 3.0 Brings RDMA and Zero-Copy Transfer to Camera Links
The new streaming protocol lets a camera write directly into host memory without operating-system involvement, targeting 400G-class links while keeping GenICam and backward interoperability.

The Association for Advancing Automation released GigE Vision 3.0 on 12 May 2026, with the specification and licensing information published for download. The standard was approved at the spring International Vision Standards Meeting held from 13 to 17 April 2026 in Prague, hosted by imavix and the European Machine Vision Association, where 57 engineers in the GigE Vision session voted and passed it unanimously.
The substantive change is the transport. Version 3.0 integrates remote direct memory access over Converged Ethernet version 2 and defines a new GigE Vision RDMA Streaming Protocol, which lets a camera write image data directly into host memory without involving the operating system — zero-copy transfer, in the usual phrase. With RoCEv2-capable network interface cards the standard targets bandwidths of 400G and above, and the expanded control channel carries more data per packet. A3 cites low CPU utilisation, low latency and preserved backward interoperability.
Bob McCurrach, A3's director of vision and imaging standards, framed the release in terms of freeing system resources for real-time processing, which is the practical effect: the CPU cycles that previously went into moving pixels become available to the algorithm that looks at them.
GigE Vision continues to rely on GenICam XML device description files through the GenApi module to expose camera features, so existing tooling carries forward rather than being replaced. That continuity matters more than it sounds — it is the difference between an upgrade and a migration.
For an integrator specifying a multi-camera inspection cell, the planning consequence is that high-bandwidth acquisition can now be designed around standard NICs and switch fabric instead of frame grabbers, provided the network layer is built for lossless Ethernet from the start. RoCEv2 is not something you add to an existing plant network afterwards; it wants priority flow control and a fabric configured for it. Camera, driver and switch procurement all now need a GigE Vision 3.0 line item.
