Home Assistant 2026.8 Adds Native Matter Doorbell Press Events

Home Assistant's 2026.8 beta adds native support for Matter doorbell press events and ships an updated Matter Server, along with cleaner web addresses and more flexible entity naming for fresh installations.

Doorbell press events are a smaller change than they sound, and a more useful one. A doorbell is a momentary event rather than a state, which fits awkwardly into a model built around entities that are on or off. Handling the press natively means automations can trigger on it directly instead of watching for a state change that has to be inferred and then debounced.

The entity naming change is likely to matter more day to day, particularly for large installations where naming conventions applied at setup determine how workable the system is a year later. Both changes point the same way: Matter support in the major platforms is moving past basic device onboarding into the details that decide whether a deployment is pleasant to live with.
