Iridium Ships a Hybrid Satellite, Cellular and GNSS Module in One Package

The 9604 puts L-band satellite, LTE-M and multi-constellation positioning into 16 by 26 mm, on a footprint device makers already have tooling for.

Announced on 26 June 2026, the Iridium 9604 IoT module and its development kit reached commercial availability, ending the sampling and evaluation phase. The part measures 16 by 26 by 2.4 mm and is stated to cut board space by 60% or more compared with a discrete design.

Three radios sit in that footprint: Iridium Short Burst Data over L-band satellite, LTE-M Cat-M1 cellular, and multi-constellation GNSS covering GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou. The combination is the point. An asset that spends most of its life in cellular coverage and some of it outside — a trailer, a vessel, a pipeline inspection unit, a generator at a remote site — has historically needed either two radios and the board space for both, or a compromise on where it works.

The design decision worth noting is the base. The 9604 is built on the u-blox SARA-R5 platform, so a device maker inherits an existing cellular module footprint and toolchain rather than starting a new integration. For anyone with an LTE-M product already in the field, that turns satellite fallback from a redesign into a variant.

Iridium names transportation, utilities, infrastructure, maritime and remote monitoring as target segments, which is a consistent list: they are the applications where coverage is intermittent by nature rather than by accident.

The engineering caution is about expectations. Short Burst Data is exactly what its name says — small messages, not a data link. A design that assumes satellite is simply slower cellular will disappoint. The pattern that works is deciding in advance which messages matter enough to pay satellite rates for, summarising locally, and letting the rest wait for cellular. That is a firmware decision made early, not a configuration setting changed later.
