The LoRa Alliance reports LoRaWAN has reached 125 million deployed devices globally, growing at a 25 percent compound annual rate, and frames the technology as a fourth pillar of wireless connectivity beside cellular, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
The pillar framing is marketing, but the underlying claim is defensible in a specific way. LoRaWAN occupies a corner of the design space the other three cannot reach: multi-kilometre range on a battery that lasts years, at a cost per node low enough to justify instrumenting things nobody would previously have instrumented. Water meters, soil probes and cattle are not applications the other three lost — they are applications the other three never had.
The more interesting point in the same material is that multi-protocol support has become an expectation rather than a differentiator. Combining LoRaWAN with BLE, Z-Wave or Wi-SUN in a single product is increasingly assumed, which shifts the engineering problem from choosing a radio to coexisting several. That is a harder problem, and it lands in antenna design and power budgeting rather than in protocol selection.
