Matter 1.5 Adds a Unified Closures Framework and Soil Sensors

Matter 1.5 is described as the standard's broadest functional expansion so far, and two of its additions have had less attention than cameras: a unified closures framework and support for soil sensors.

The closures framework matters because the category was previously a mess. Blinds, curtains, awnings, gates, garage doors and windows all do approximately the same thing — move between open and closed, sometimes partially, sometimes with a tilt — and each vendor modelled it differently. A single framework means a controller can operate a blind it has never seen without a device-specific integration, which is the whole premise of the standard applied to a category that had escaped it.

Soil sensors are a smaller addition with a clear application: irrigation that responds to how wet the ground actually is rather than to a timer. That is one of the few smart home features with a measurable resource saving attached, and it has been held back partly by every soil probe speaking its own protocol. Standardising the sensor makes the controller side worth building, which is usually the order these things have to happen in.
