Nordic Ships a Thumbnail-Sized Module Combining Cellular and Satellite IoT
The nRF9151 runs LTE-M, NB-IoT and satellite NB-NTN from a single part, collapsing what used to be separate designs for terrestrial and off-grid coverage.

Nordic Semiconductor has shipped the nRF9151, a module roughly the size of a thumbnail that supports LTE-M, NB-IoT and satellite NB-NTN from a single part.
Combining terrestrial and non-terrestrial radios in one module addresses a problem that used to force an early and awkward decision. A tracker crossing regions with patchy coverage previously meant either accepting gaps, or designing a second product with a satellite modem, a different antenna arrangement and its own firmware path. Neither is attractive when the two variants otherwise do the same job.
The design consideration that does not disappear is power. Satellite links have a different energy profile from a nearby cell tower, and a device that silently falls back to satellite can consume its battery budget far faster than the terrestrial case it was sized for. Fallback logic worth having is explicit about when it is allowed to happen and how often, rather than treating the satellite path as simply another network.
