Nordic's Satellite-Capable Cellular Kit Reaches Distribution

The nRF9151 SMA development kit is now stocked at Mouser with beta modem firmware for NB-IoT non-terrestrial networks, putting LTE-M, NB-IoT, satellite, DECT NR+ and GNSS behind one part number.

Nordic Semiconductor's nRF9151 SMA development kit is now stocked in broad-line distribution at Mouser, which is a smaller event than a product launch and a more consequential one. The kit is built around Nordic's LTE-M and NB-IoT system-in-package, with DECT NR+ and GNSS support, and it ships with Taoglas and Kyocera antennas plus IoT SIMs from Deutsche Telekom, Onomondo and Monogoto.

The specification that matters is in the firmware. Beta modem firmware for the nRF9151 adds NB-IoT NTN — non-terrestrial networks — which gives the part satellite connectivity alongside its terrestrial cellular modes, from the same silicon and the same antenna port.

For anyone designing remote industrial assets, that collapses a fork that has been expensive for years. A pipeline sensor, a tank-farm gauge, a rail wagon tracker or a field pump controller has until now needed a terrestrial variant and a satellite variant: two bills of material, two certification paths, two firmware images, two spares holdings, and a sales conversation about which one the customer's site needs. One part that covers LTE-M, NB-IoT, NB-IoT NTN and DECT NR+ with GNSS makes that a configuration rather than a product line.

The bundled antennas and three carrier SIMs matter for the same practical reason. A satellite-capable design stops being a project the moment it becomes a stock order, and distribution availability with the radio accessories already in the box is roughly where that transition happens.

Mouser is also stocking the nRF54LM20-DK, which supports both the nRF54LM20A and nRF54LM20B and covers Bluetooth LE, Bluetooth Mesh, Matter, Aliro, Thread, Zigbee and 2.4 GHz proprietary modes at up to 4 Mbps with high-speed USB. The LM20B variant integrates an Axon neural processing unit for on-device audio classification, voice control, biometrics and low-fidelity vision. Alongside them are the nRF54L15 development kit, positioned for industrial IoT and asset tracking, and the nPM2100 EK power-management board with a boost regulator, auto pass-through mode and six interchangeable battery holders.

Beta firmware is still beta, and NTN coverage depends on operator agreements that are not uniform by region. But the hardware question — can one design reach both the tower and the satellite — now has a stock number attached to it.
