One Pass for Leak Detection and Pipeline Condition

Aganova, based in Málaga, has launched a new generation of Nautilus, its in-line inspection system for large-diameter water pipelines. The new capability is branded Smart Condition Assessment, and what it does is combine leak detection with pipeline condition analysis in a single deployment rather than requiring two separate surveys.

Hardware changes accompany it: a rechargeable power system with wireless charging, wireless connectivity and remote management, alongside a redesigned hardware and software architecture. CEO Marcos Barrera said the company is taking a major step toward extracting greater value from every inspection. Daniel Mediano, head of product and technology, described the result as a platform that turns inspection data into a more comprehensive diagnosis.

The number in the announcement that carries weight is 4,500 — kilometres of inspections carried out across water networks worldwide, on which the platform draws. Condition assessment is a data problem before it is a sensor problem. Distinguishing a wall-loss signature from an acoustic artefact requires a corpus of inspections where the answer was later confirmed by excavation, and no amount of sensor improvement substitutes for that.

The logistics matter as much. Large-diameter mains are expensive and disruptive to take out of service, so every inspection has to be scheduled, permitted and worked around. Halving the number of interventions by getting both answers from one pass changes what a utility can realistically survey in a year, and wireless charging and remote management address the field handling that quietly limits how often these tools go into a pipe at all.
