One Screen for Twenty-Four Feeder Controllers

Coperion K-Tron launched K-Vision-III on 17 September, a feeder control platform that centralises monitoring and control for up to 24 KCM feeder control modules on a single process line, through one high-resolution touchscreen.

Functionally it covers real-time feeder monitoring, trending, configuration and process adjustment, with expanded recipe management spanning material configurations, process recipes, recipe proportioning, staged startup and shutdown sequences, and ingredient priority. It speaks Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP and Profinet, and acts as a communication gateway between the feeder line and the plant DCS or PLC. Jay Daniel, head of R&D for feeders and feeder systems in Coperion's Performance Materials Division, is named on the release. The interface ships in multiple languages.

Two features deserve more attention than they will get. The first is the aggregation itself. Twenty-four feeder controllers exposed individually to a DCS is several hundred device-level tags that nobody wants in their tag database, and a gateway that presents the line as one thing is what keeps that manageable — and, incidentally, is where feeder data becomes practically accessible to a plant historian.

The second is backup and restore of feeder controller parameters. That sounds like housekeeping. It is an availability feature. Replacing a failed feeder controller without a parameter backup means re-entering calibration and configuration by hand from whatever documentation exists, which on a continuous line is measured in lost production rather than in engineering hours. Vendors rarely lead with this, and maintenance teams rarely forget it once they have needed it.
