More Than 70% of Midsize and Large Warehouses Plan AMR Fleets by Year End

Adoption has moved past the pilot stage, and the reported bottleneck is shifting from the robots themselves to the software that schedules them.

More than seventy percent of midsize and large warehouses plan to have autonomous mobile robot fleets in operation by the end of 2026, according to industry analysis of deployment intentions. The figure marks a transition that has been visible for two years: AMRs have stopped being a pilot project justified on novelty and become a line item justified on throughput.

What is more interesting than the adoption number is where operators say the difficulty now lies. In early deployments the hard part was the robot: navigation reliability, battery endurance, safe operation around people. Those problems are not solved but they are engineered, and vendors ship machines that work. The reported constraint has moved up the stack to fleet management, the software layer that decides which robot takes which task, how traffic flows through aisles, when machines charge, and how the fleet degrades when three of forty units are out of service.

This matters because the value of a fleet is not linear in its size. Ten robots can be scheduled adequately by simple rules. Forty cannot: the interactions between them — congestion at pick faces, queueing at chargers, competition for the same aisle — become the dominant factor in throughput, and a fleet that is scheduled badly can deliver less than a smaller one that is scheduled well.

The practical implication for anyone planning a deployment is that the software question deserves the same scrutiny as the hardware question, and earlier than feels natural. Ask how the fleet manager handles a blocked aisle, a robot that fails mid-task, and a shift where volume is twice the plan. Ask whether it can be integrated with the warehouse management system already in place or expects to replace it.

The robots are the visible part of the purchase. The scheduling is the part that determines whether the business case holds at scale.
