SGP.32 Moves From Roadmap to Shipping for IoT eSIM

SGP.32, the GSMA's remote SIM provisioning specification written specifically for IoT rather than for phones, has moved from roadmap to shipping. Certified hardware, commercial SIM deliveries and orchestration platforms are now generally available, with compliant deliveries beginning on 17 April 2026.
The problem SGP.32 exists to solve is narrow and painful. Consumer eSIM provisioning assumes a device with a screen and a user to tap through it, which describes almost nothing in an IoT deployment. The earlier machine-to-machine specification worked but required an SM-SR relationship that in practice locked a fleet to the operator it launched with, which is precisely the lock-in eSIM was supposed to remove.
What this changes for a deployment planned now is the negotiating position rather than the hardware. Being able to move a fleet between operators without physical access is worth more at contract renewal than at deployment, and it is the kind of capability that has to be designed in from the start because retrofitting it means touching every device. Commercial acceleration is expected mainly from the second half of 2026, so specifying it today is planning for the second contract rather than the first.
