The global smart water meter market is projected to grow from roughly $6.02 billion in 2026 to $14.74 billion by 2034, a compound annual rate near 11.85 percent, with advanced metering infrastructure rollouts named as the main driver.

AMI is the part of that worth understanding, because it is a different proposition from a meter that merely reports remotely. Traditional meters require someone to walk the route; a remotely read meter removes that trip. AMI transmits usage automatically and continuously, and it is the continuity rather than the automation that unlocks everything downstream — leak detection, demand modelling, and consumption feedback all depend on having frequent readings rather than periodic ones.

Water has lagged electricity in metering for structural reasons rather than technical ones. Water meters sit in pits and basements where radio propagation is poor, they are rarely near mains power so the radio must run for a decade on a battery, and water tariffs in many regions are too low to justify the hardware on billing accuracy alone. The economics change when the meter is justified by the water it stops losing rather than by the meter reading it replaces, which is why leak reduction rather than billing is what appears in most of these business cases.
