Ubitium Tapes Out Its First Universal RISC-V Processor on 8nm
The German startup reached first silicon on Samsung Foundry's 8nm process, with a design that runs Linux and an RTOS at once while handling radar, audio and edge inference on the same core.

German chip startup Ubitium announced at Embedded World 2026 in Nuremberg that it has reached tape-out of first silicon for its universal RISC-V processor, fabricated on Samsung Foundry's 8nm process.
The design's claim is unusual: a single architecture running Linux and a real-time operating system simultaneously, while handling radar and audio signal processing in real time and executing neural network inference at the edge. Conventional embedded designs reach for separate blocks for these workloads — an application processor, a DSP, and increasingly a dedicated neural accelerator — each with its own toolchain and its own share of the silicon.
Consolidating them addresses a real cost in embedded development, where much of the engineering effort goes into partitioning work across heterogeneous cores and keeping several build environments in step. Tape-out is not availability, though, and the claims that matter for anyone evaluating this — sustained throughput, power under mixed load, and the maturity of the toolchain — are not answerable from first silicon. It is a milestone worth tracking rather than designing around today.
