Warehouses Are Layering RFID, UWB and LoRaWAN Rather Than Choosing One

A pharmaceutical facility might run RFID portals at dock doors, UWB tags on high-value shipments and LoRaWAN cold chain sensors, all feeding a single dashboard.

The pattern emerging in serious tracking deployments is layered rather than singular. A pharmaceutical warehouse might use RFID portals at dock doors, UWB tags on high-value temperature-sensitive shipments, and LoRaWAN sensors for cold chain monitoring, with all three feeding one unified dashboard.

That combination is not indecision. Each technology is answering a different question. RFID at a doorway answers whether something crossed a boundary, cheaply and for every item. UWB answers precisely where a specific high-value item is, at a cost per tag that only makes sense for items worth locating to the centimetre. LoRaWAN answers what temperature a shipment has experienced over hours, from a battery that lasts years, at range no indoor positioning system provides.

The hard part is not the radios but the reconciliation. Three systems produce three views of the same stock, with different update rates, different identifiers and different failure modes, and the dashboard that unifies them is where the engineering effort actually goes. Deployments that budget for the tags and gateways but not for that integration tend to end up with three dashboards, which is the same information and none of the benefit.
